College alumni invited to join Luton Success

Luton Success aims to bring together college alumni to help inspire young people in the town and help guide them through the challenges brought about by the past year of the Covid-19 pandemic. As part of the project, former college students that have gone onto careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are sharing their experiences and career insights on local community radio station Inspire FM.

The project launch coincided with British Science Week, which begins next week and runs between 5 and 14 March. The next series of radio interviews on Inspire FM take place on Thursday 4 March at 4.30pm when The Futures Show will feature an all-female line-up in a ‘Women in STEM’ special. You can catch it on Inspire FM (105.1 FM) and online at www.inspirefm.org.

Anisah Akhtar, of Luton Sixth Form College, has led the project. She said: “It is pleasing to hear the stories of those who studied at the college before going onto such successful professional lives.

“Our former students remain a valuable part of the college community and such a great resource. It is pleasing to see such a wonderful response to our call for them to join us for Luton Success, starting with our work as part of British Science Week on Inspire FM.”

She added: “We will be continuing Luton Success into the summer and would encourage college alumni to get in touch if they want to be a part of our work in providing opportunities for young people.”

The radio shows have been brought together by Luton Sixth Form College, the British Science Association and local charity Unleashing Potential, who have run projects aimed at young people in the town for a number of years.

Jawairiya Tanveer, a mentor for Unleashing Potential and the presenter of The Futures Show, added: “With our work in the town, we remain committed to developing projects aimed at providing the best opportunities for young people.

“Given the difficulties brought about the past year, it is even more important to help create such initiatives.”
