Promoting fundamental British values

At Luton Sixth Form College, we actively promote the fundamental British values of:
Democracy.
The rule of law.
Individual liberty.
Mutual respect and acceptance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
These values are central to life in modern Britain and closely reflect the inclusive ethos of our College. We bring them to life through teaching, tutorials, enrichment, student leadership and the everyday relationships that shape our community.

We encourage students to think critically, express their views confidently and engage respectfully with perspectives different from their own. Legitimate debate and disagreement are an important part of education. Discrimination, harassment and extremist views that undermine the rights or safety of others are challenged appropriately.

Democracy

Students are encouraged to understand democratic principles and to participate actively in College life.
The Student Council provides a strong and representative student voice, enabling students to raise issues, influence decisions and contribute to the development of College policies and practices. Student representatives also contribute to College governance and other decision-making forums.
Surveys, consultations and student forums provide further opportunities for students to express their views. Visits, debates and encounters with local and national political representatives help students understand democratic institutions and learn how to examine, articulate and defend different points of view.

The rule of law

Students learn why laws, rules and agreed standards are important in protecting individuals, maintaining fairness and supporting a safe community.

Our expectations are set out clearly through the Student Learning Agreement and related College policies. Students are helped to understand both their rights and their responsibilities, as well as the consequences of actions that affect others.

Learning is strengthened through the curriculum, tutorials and engagement with professionals from public services and the justice system.

Individual Liberty

We support students to become confident, independent young adults who can make informed choices and take responsibility for their decisions.

Within a safe and supportive environment, students learn about their rights, personal freedoms and responsibilities. Through teaching, tutorials, careers education and safeguarding activities, they develop the knowledge and judgement to exercise those freedoms safely and responsibly—both in person and online.

Mutual Respect

Respect is fundamental to our College culture.Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

We expect every member of our community to treat others with dignity, kindness and consideration. Students learn that their words, choices and behaviour affect both their own rights and the rights of others.

These expectations are reinforced through teaching, tutorials, enrichment, the Student Code of Conduct and the example set by staff and student leaders.

Respect and acceptance for different faiths and beliefs

Our diversity is one of the College’s greatest strengths.

We create opportunities for students to learn about and celebrate different faiths, beliefs, cultures and traditions—including the right to hold no religious belief. Students are encouraged to share their experiences, listen to others and approach difference with curiosity and respect.

Through our curriculum, cultural events, tutorials and wider College life, we prepare students to contribute positively to a diverse, democratic and inclusive society.
