Chemistry

Chemistry is often called the central science, connecting physics, biology and geology to explain how the world works at a molecular level. You’ll build practical laboratory skills alongside strong theoretical knowledge, opening doors to a huge range of degrees and careers, from medicine to research.

What are the entry requirements?
You'll need a grade 4 in GCSE English, a grade 6 in GCSE Maths, and two grade 6s in GCSE Science (or a grade 6 in Chemistry specifically, if you're taking Triple Science). You'll also need an overall GCSE average of 5.6. If you're not studying A-level Maths, you'll add Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) to your timetable.
What will you learn?
You'll study atoms and how they combine, then explore how the resulting compounds behave in the real world. Weekly practical chemistry builds your laboratory skills, alongside strong theoretical grounding in organic, physical and analytical chemistry.
Can I combine Chemistry with other courses?
Yes. Chemistry combines well with Biology and Physics, and is essential for Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and Biochemistry. It's also useful alongside Physiotherapy and other science-based pathways.
What can this course lead to?
Chemistry is highly respected for university entry and opens routes into research, industry and a wide range of science-based careers, with graduates sought after across many sectors.
